Midnight on the Block

Issue 47 · Field Notes

The studio smells like cold coffee and warm tape. It's 2 a.m. and the city outside has finally gone quiet, but in here the bassline is still breathing — looping, mutating, refusing to settle. Marcus leans back, eyes closed, letting the track tell him where it wants to go.

"People think the underground is a place," he says. "It's not. It's a decision you make every single day — to stay honest when nobody's watching, to build something real before anyone's listening."

He started recording in a converted laundromat, splicing borrowed gear and stubbornness into a sound that nobody asked for. The first tape sold eleven copies. The second sold out of the trunk of a car. By the third, the block knew his name — and so did everyone who'd ever felt invisible. What follows is the full story.
